The expert’s report by Thomas Fusenig, Essen dated 4 August 2017 describes Rottenhammer the Elder as the creator of this painting and lists comparative examples, especially a painting with the same subject by Rottenhammer held at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and another held at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. The report also lists a further example for comparison, a pen and ink drawing with white heightening from the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin. At the time of the painting’s creation this subject was linked to an anticipated peace process. The subject has to be understood as an allegory: the presentation of the grapes interpreted as the reward for peace and the wine as a symbol for sealing the good fortune of peace.
