The great master of expression and facial expressions, Frans Hals, had established himself as an important portrait artist by the 1620s at the latest and maintained a large workshop in Haarlem. In addition to his own sons Harmen Hals (1611-1669), Frans Hals II (1618-1669) and his brother Dirck Hals (1591-1656), Adriaen Brouwer (1603-1638) and Judith Leyster (1609-1660) also worked for him. Frans Hals passed on his unique style of lively, visible brushstrokes and the characteristic capture of physiognomy to his students and colleagues. Frans Hals`s work with a monogram, dated around 1626-28, is now in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam.
